With all due respect to the great people

When I was a kid, my dad, my mom, my teachers and not in the least my close friends used to tell me of great people who had studied under candle light, street light, Kersonese Lamp and I remember someone also telling me that there was this great guy who had studied using a collection of fire-fly. I curse myself for not asking the question in the below mentioned mail chain
